Officers 2007 - 2008





PRESIDENT - Dr. Frank U. Perry
Illinois

Dr. Perry graduated from St. Louis University Dental School in 1966 and earned a Masters in Education and Human Development in 1983 from The George Washington University. He served 21 years in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps. The last seven years at the Naval Hospital Bethesda and the Naval Dental School at Bethesda Maryland. This tour included starting and directing the General Practice Residency program at the Naval Hospital for three years and four years directing the 2 year Comprehensive Dentistry Residency. After retiring from the Navy in 1987, Dr. Perry joined the faculty at Northwestern University Dental School as a Clinical Associate Professor. He initiated an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program at Northwestern. In 1998 he became the Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs until 2000 when he joined the faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Dentistry as Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry. At both Northwestern University Dental School and at the University of Illinois, College of Dentistry, he has been honored as Teacher of the Year on numerous occasions.

Dr. Perry is also a diplomate of the Federal Services Board of General Dentistry and the American Board of General Dentistry. He served a an examiner and president of the Federal Services Board of General Dentistry.

Dr. Perry has been a member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry since 1981 and has served as the chairman of the Local Arrangements Committee since 1987, Executive Councilor, and Vice-President. He is member and serves on the Board of Governors of The Chicago Odontographic Society. He is a member of the American Dental Education Association as well as the Chicago Dental Society and the Illinois Dental Society.




PRESIDENT-ELECT - Dr. William E. Morris
North Carolina

Dr. Morris graduated from North Carolina State University in 1974 and from University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in 1978. After 28 years he sold his private practice in Eden, N.C. and currently practices full time at Smith Mountain Lake, VA. Since joining the Academy in 1982 he has presented table clinics and been a member of the Seminar Committee, Special Projects Committee, and Executive Council. Dr. Morris currently serves as Trustee and Secretary/Treasurer of the AOD Founders' Fund.

Dr. Morris has been actively involved with the Hollenback-Medina Operative Dentistry Seminar since 1981 and currently serves as President. He is a member of the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators and a Fellow in the International College of Dentists. He serves on the Board of the Dental Foundation of North Carolina with the UNC School of Dentistry and is a recent graduate of the Institute for Teaching and Learning Program offered through the Academy for Academic Leadership.

He is a member of the North Carolina Dental Society and the Virginia Dental Association. He serves on the Foundation Board of the Virginia Museum of Natural History. He and his wife Nollie have three grown children, sons Hunter and Clark, and daughter Sterling.




IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT - Dr. Susanne T. Grennell
New York

Dr. Susanne T. Grennell is in private practice in Dutchess County, New York. She is a graduate of Elmira Collage and she has remained active in alumni affairs serving on its Board of Directors. The College recently presented her with its Distinguished Achievement Award. During her time in dental school at the University of Buffalo she was selected as one of two students to represent the entire student body on the University Hearing committee. She was graduated from the School of Dental Medicine in 1975 and in 1981 became a member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry, mentored and sponsored by Dr. Bill Ferguson, this Academy's first president. She has served as a Council member from 1998 to 2001 during which time she became involved with the decision to have a web site. She has authored and co-created this Academy's web site along with her committee (Dr. Tom Berry, Dr. John Bloomfield, Dr. Frank Caughman and Dr. Frank Perry). She is currently serving as its webmaster.

Dr. Grennell is a member of the RV Tucker Study Club in the New Jersey Chapter mentored by Dr. Warren Johnson, and the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators. She has demonstrated clinical techniques at both the Tucker and the AAGFO annual meetings. She has also served many years on the executive board and as president of the Dutchess County Dental Society.

Dr. Grennell is a Paul Harris Fellow in the Rotary. She has donated time and supplies to provide dentistry for the needy both at home and in Paraguay. She collects art and enjoys cooking, and riding horses.




SECRETARY - Dr. Gregory E. Smith
Florida

Dr. Smith graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1965 and earned a postdoctoral Master of Science in Dentistry degree from the same University with a major in Restorative Dentistry in 1972. He joined the University of Florida Faculty in 1972. In 1974 he assumed chairmanship of the Division of Operative Dentistry at the School of Dentistry at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver; and then served CU as Associate Dean as well from 1976-1979. He returned to UF as Chairman of the Department of Operative Dentistry in 1979 and served as chair from 1979-1984, and again from 1991 until August 1998. He has lectured internationally and authored many scholarly papers in referred journals in the 35 years of his academic career.

He has served on the American Dental Association's National Board of Test Construction Committees on Dental Anatomy and also on Operative Dentistry and is presently serving on the National Board Test Construction Committee for the Part II Case Based Examination. In 1998 He was honored by the Academy of Operative Dentistry with its award: The Award of Excellence, for 30 years in academic dentistry and for 27 years of service to the Academy which he continues to serve as Secretary. Dr. Smith was elected Assistant Secretary of the Academy of Operative Dentistry in 1974, and then as Secretary in 1991; and he has held that position continually since that date.

His professional affiliations include Fellowship in the American and International Colleges of Dentistry; membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon, and past President of the UF chapter; member of Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity and Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity. He is the founding mentor of two dental study clubs, member of the ADEA, in which he is past president of the Operative Dentistry section; a member of Sigma Xi research honorary society at the University of Florida, and the ADA.




TREASURER - Dr. Joel M. Wagoner
North Carolina

After graduating from Duke University in 1971, Dr. Wagoner entered dental school at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry where he earned his D.D.S. degree in 1975. For two years, he served in the U. S. Army Dental Corps at Ft. McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was awarded the U. S. Army Commendation Medal. In 1977, he began his private practice of general dentistry in Beckley, WV, an endeavor which he enjoyed for twenty-four years. Currently, Dr. Wagoner practices full-time in Chapel Hill, NC, and also teaches clinical operative dentistry at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry.

Besides the Academy of Operative Dentistry, Dr. Wagoner is a member of the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators, The American Dental Association, The North Carolina Dental Society, and is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. He is a certified member of the American Board of Operative Dentistry, and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Operative Dentistry. His study club affiliations are the George M. Hollenback Operative Dentistry Seminar and the Butler- Ross Study Club.

He and his wife, Presley, are the proud parents of three children, Merritt, Andrew and Mary Elizabeth.




ASSISTANT SECRETARY - Dr. Richard G. Stevenson III
California

Doctor Stevenson received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the UCLA School of Dentistry in 1986. After practicing general dentistry for 8 years in Laguna Niguel, California, he sold his private practice and accepted a full time teaching position at the UCLA School of Dentistry, and is currently Clinical Associate Professor and Chair, Division of Restorative Dentistry.

Dr. Stevenson has been recognized by his students on numerous occasions as Teacher of the Year, and has recently received the prestigious University of California Los Angeles, University-Wide Distinguished Teaching Award in 2003. Dr. Stevenson has earned a Fellowship Medical Education from the UCLA School of Medicine. He has published abstracts and publications in various journals including Operative Dentistry.

Dr. Stevenson has been a member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry since 1992, and has served on various committees and as an Executive Councilor. He holds Fellowships in the Academy of General Dentistry, Academy of Dentistry, International, and American College of Dentists. Dr. Stevenson is a charter member of the Orange County R.V. Tucker Cast Gold Study Club since 1991, and has demonstrated cast and direct gold techniques internationally at both the Academy of R.V. Tucker Study Clubs and the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators annual meetings. Recently, Dr. Stevenson has been selected to co-mentor of the R.V. Tucker Los Angeles Cast Gold Study Club with long-time AOD member, Dr. Richard Hoard. In addition to teaching, he maintains a busy intramural private practice limited to Restorative Dentistry. He attempts to maintain balance in his life through teaching and practicing martial arts were he holds a second-degree black belt in Kenpo Karate. He also has a quest to summit all 15 of California's 14,000+ foot peaks and has accomplished 5 summits so far. He resides in Valencia, California with his wife, Victoria and their two sons.

Dr. Daniel C.N. Chan - 2007

Dr. Daniel C.N. Chan is Professor of Oral Rehabilitation and Director of the Division of Operative Dentistry at Medical College of Georgia.

He received his D.M.D. from the University of the Philippines in 1979 and his D.D.S. (1988) and M.S. in Operative Dentistry (1984) from the University of Iowa. Prior to joining the faculty at MCG he was on faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Chan has been widely published and is a member of the editorial review boards of Operative Dentistry, Singapore Dental Journal and the American Journal of Dentistry. He is a fellow of the Academy of Dental Materials and the International College of Dentists. His areas of interest include composite materials, adhesive and glass ionomer cements. He has conducted many Continuing Education courses in the United States and abroad.

Dr. Chan is an avid stamp collector and enjoys swimming and hiking. Dr. Chan and his wife Eva have two sons.




Dr. Paul Y. Hasegawa - 2007

Dr Paul Y Hasegawa attended the University of Washington School of Dentistry and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1990. Upon graduation he entered private practice and later in 1994 joined his father's South Seattle practice.

Dr Hasegawa is the past president and founding member of the Pacific Northwest Gnathologic Study Club mentored by Dr Olin Loomis. He is also a member/treasurer of the Pacific Northwest Orthopedic Study Club and from 1990 to 1998 was active in the Ralph Plumer Gold Foil Study Club. Dr Hasegawa is honored to serve the academy and has in the past been the assistant managing editor for the Journal of Operative Dentistry.

Dr Hasegawa has many commitments in his community and currently is the treasurer and president elect of the Seattle Rainier Chamber of Commerce. He is an active biker, skier and enjoys playing squash a couple times a week. Dr Hasegawa and Pam, his wife, have two children.




Dr. Henry A. St. Germain, Jr. - 2008

Dr. Henry A. St. Germain, Jr. is an Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in Lincoln, NE. Henry received his DMD degree from Tufts University in 1975, an MSD in Operative Dentistry from Indiana University in 1983 and an MEd from George Washington University in 1992. Henry belongs to the Academy of Operative Dentistry, American Dental Association, Nebraska Dental Association, American Association of Dental Research, American Association of Dental Schools, American Academy of Gold Foil Operators, Omicron Kappa Upsilon (Alpha Alpha chapter) and is a fellow in both the American College and International College of Dentists. Henry has served as the Chairman of the Examination and Certification Committee and as the President of the American Board of Operative Dentistry.

He completed a 20-year career in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps in 1995 and his last assignment in the Navy was Chairman of Operative Dentistry and Specialty Advisor to the Surgeon General for Operative Dentistry at the Naval Dental School, Bethesda, MD. Dr. St. Germain became an Associate Professor and the Director of Operative Dentistry at the University of Nebraska Medical Center after retirement from the Navy and was selected as the Chairman of Adult Restorative Dentistry in 1997. The Department of Adult Restorative Dentistry includes 17 full-time and 15 part-time faculty in the disciplines of Dental Biomaterials, General Practice Residency, Operative Dentistry, and Fixed/Removable Prosthodontics. In addition to the responsibilities as a Chairman, he currently directs a lecture/lab courses in Operative Dentistry and Occlusion.

His research interests have focused on the finishing/polishing, marginal fit, and light-activation of direct and indirect restorations. He has been very active in the Dental College's Student Research programs and has mentored three 1st place table clinic winners who represented Nebraska at the ADA/Dentsply student table clinic competitions. Henry also actively practices General Dentistry in the Faculty Practice one day a week and teaches in the Restorative Dentistry Clinics two days a week. He has received awards for teaching from the students from 1996 to the present and in 2002 received the University of Nebraska's Medical Center's award for Distinguished Faculty Teaching. For extracurricular activities, he enjoys traveling, golf and skiing. Also, whenever the chance arises Henry likes to admire automobiles especially the classics from the 50's to 70's. Henry and his wife Ellen will celebrate 32 years of marriage this year and have four adult children: Kenneth, Thomas, Michelle and Michael.




Dr. Bruce W. Small - 2008

Bruce W. Small, is a practicing restorative dentist from Lawrenceville, New Jersey concentrating on clinical excellence. Dr. Small is an associate professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and with other members of his study club mentors a cast and direct gold selective/elective at UMDNJ for senior dental students. He has been granted the honor of a fellowship in both the International and American College of Dentists and is a master of the Academy of General Dentistry. He is on the board of directors of the L.D. Pankey Foundation where he is also a teaching associate. Dr Small is the editor of the restorative dentistry column in General Dentistry, the journal of the Academy of General Dentistry. He is an active member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry, The Academy of Richard V. Tucker Cast Gold Study Clubs, as well as the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators.

He has published over 90 articles in dental journals, lectured in over 300 locations in the United States and other countries, and is recognized as one of the top 100 speakers in dentistry. He recently was voted one of the top general dentists in New Jersey as well as one of the best dentists in America by his peers.




Dr. Nairn H.F. Wilson - European Section

Nairn Wilson is currently Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Dean and Head of the Dental Institute, King's College London at Guy's, King's and St Thomas' Hospitals. He has been is this post since October 2001. Also he is Executive Secretary of the Council of Deans of the UK Dental Schools. He was President of the General Dental Council from 1999 to 2003. He is a Honorary (Visiting) Professor of Restorative Dentistry, University of Manchester. Previous positions included Consultant Adviser in Restorative Dentistry to the Chief Medical Officer, Dean of the University Dental Hospital of Manchester, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Manchester.

His interests and special expertise lie in the fields of tooth-coloured restorative systems, applied dental materials science, clinical trial methodology and dental education. Much of his research on new materials, novel instrumentation and operative procedures is practise-based.

He remains active clinically and in research, with a number of positions nationally and internationally, including, Immediate-Past President of the Academy of Operative Dentistry, European Section and President of the European Federation of Conservative Dentistry.

Achievements in Academy activities include Buonocore Memorial Lecturer in 1990 and Hollenback Memorial Prize winner in 2002
